Are You Wearing Your Magic Hat?
by Z Zoccolante
We all have something we do that makes us feel as though we’re magic.
Perhaps we don’t define it as magic, but instead–the ability to bake a delicious three-tier cake, lead a workshop with confidence and charm, rock a copyedit for a client, play a sport, take amazing photographs, be a great problem solver, or a stellar listener.
Many of these things that make us the amazing people that we are, are the unique things that propel us to the magic zone.
This zone is a place of excitement and freedom, where we’re confident about our abilities and revel in sharing them.
One such magic zone for me, is writing short stories. Last week, I wrote a tale about a witch. As I finished reading it to myself, I had the absolute sensation of being magic. I’d created an entire world with people, ideas, relationships, problems, and choices. I’d created a cool little story out of nothing. Where there was once a blank page, a world had taken shape.

I remember being elated. I remember thinking, “I AM MAGIC.” It felt like rubber bands were dancing in my skin.
And then I put my computer aside and thought, “Ok, now I gotta work.” As soon as I slid my computer aside, the magical feeling associated with my story slipped away.
It was as though I’d taken off the “fun-energy” hat and put on the “now-I-need-to-work-energy” hat.
The two energies were NOT the same.
The “work-energy” hat felt heavy and dreaded, like things I HAD TO DO, instead of things I LOVE TO DO.
I told myself I was being responsible by letting my magic hat sit on the sidelines. But that’s a big fat lie.
When I chatted with one of my friends, I told her about the excitement I feel when I write. She said,
“How can you bring that same energy into every moment of your day?”
The choice is up to me. I can allow the moments of my day to be full of “fun, magic energy,” or I can push myself into feeling like I “have to work and get things done.” Obviously, if given a choice, I’d choose the magic energy.
But the choice has been mine all along.
I can wear the magic-hat energy all the time, and so can you.
Forward Locomotion:
- What’s one thing you do that gives you the feeling of being magic?
- What does that magic energy feel like?
- Then, stay in that energy by keeping that magic hat on, as much as possible.
- Smile, because every task is an opportunity to share your magic and to feel magical.
With Love,

I really started to think about my “magic hat.” I think painting is number one on my list like you say with your writing starting with a blank slate and creating something magical. I totally feel that way about painting. I love the happiness and joy I feel when looking at my finished piece. The magic for me continues because i can see and view my pieces of magic and it makes me happy. I know we all get overwhelmed at times but keeping things in perspective and doing it with your “magic hat” on might make your task easier to accomplish.

I like the idea of the magic being carried on and almost living in the pieces you create. Painting is fantastic magic. :)
